Burnett & Williams welcomed Matthew E. Bass to its Leesburg office in early 2017. Matt is a native of nearby Berryville, Virginia, and graduated Clarke County High School before attending the University of Virginia, where he received degrees in anthropology and archaeology. In 2012, Matt received his Juris Doctor from the University of the District of Columbia’s David A. Clarke School of Law, graduating summa cum laude, at the top of his class.
While in law school, Matt dedicated more than 750 hours to the Housing and Consumer Law Clinic and Community Development Legal Clinic, helping indigent clients in the Washington, D.C. area. For his outstanding legal clinic work, Matt received The Olender Foundation’s Earl H. Davis Advocacy Award. He was also winner of the LeClerq Best Brief Award, and served as Publications Editor of the U.D.C. Law Review.
Matt is an active member of the Virginia State Bar. Prior to joining Burnett & Williams to focus exclusively on personal injury law, Matt’s practice included a wide range of civil and criminal litigation in Northern Virginia.
Outside the law, Matt has a broad range of interests. He is an avid sports fan of all the local professional teams, and though he has been known to play baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis, and golf, these days he mainly sticks to golf and softball. Matt enjoys producing and recording music as a hobby – both his father and twin brother are classically-trained professional musicians. He also recently published his first children’s book, and has several other books in various stages of production.
Community service and engagement is equally important to Matt: he is on the Board of Directors of Blue Ridge Legal Services; he served as an appointed member of the Berryville Area Development Authority from 2016 – 2020; and he is currently an elected member of the Clarke County Board of Supervisors, representing the Berryville Voting District. His numerous duties on the Board include service on the Clarke County Planning Commission, Board of Septic & Well Appeals, and Northwestern Regional Juvenile Detention Center. Matt is also the Board’s liaison to the Josephine School Community Museum, the Library Advisory Council, and the Clarke County Sheriff’s Office.
Matt and his wife Kelbi, who is also a Clarke County native, live in Berryville with their daughter Sadie and son Greyson, and enjoy spending time there with family and friends.
