Our Story

The Ampersand Pantry Project was created by Peter Burnett in 2019 to provide help to Northeast Leesburg neighborhood residents unexpectedly finding themselves in need of food and other personal essentials. He built and installed a food pantry box on Edwards Ferry Road, the principle behind this box was simple: take what you need and leave what you can.  During the COVID-19 shutdown the Ampersand Pantry Project expanded its mission by distributing free lunches and other products 7 days a week.

From April 16, 2020 to August 25, 2021 the project and its dedicated volunteers distributed more than 120,000 free lunches, nearly one million diapers, 22,000 carnations, 20,000 pounds of pet food, dozens of haircuts, numerous hygiene products, and thousands of pounds of fresh vegetables. For two years the project also distributed fully cooked Thanksgiving meals to stressed neighbors and put on a Santa’s Workshop gift distribution at Christmas time.

The Ampersand Pantry Project South, supported by Jim Williams, also began during the pandemic to provide lunches for those in the Hopewell community suffering from food insecurity.

What We Do Now

Now that our community has recovered from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have gone back to our roots. We have two little free pantry boxes, one on Edwards Ferry Road (next to Crossroads Baptist Church) and the other on Harrison Street (across from Brandon Park) where we work together with community members to keep each box stocked with non-perishable’s and other essential items. Community members in need can access these pantry boxes 24/7.
